How many people get injured or lose their lives in alcohol related traffic accidents every year? How many individuals lose their lives every year because of drinking problems? How many junior high, high school, and college students lose their lives every year due to an alcohol overdose? How many people are the victims of alcohol related crime or violence each and every year? How many people face serious consequences in their lives because they received a DUI conviction? How many people die each year from a condition that is totally preventable, such as alcohol poisoning? On an annual basis, how many alcoholics fail to get the professional alcohol treatment they need?

Why Would Anyone Want to Drink in a Hazardous and Excessive Manner?

So what’s the point in asking these questions? Basically to highlight the devastating and destructive nature of abusive and excessive drinking. Indeed, and based on the above questions, I wonder why anyone would choose to drink in an abusive manner.

Stated differently, with the host of financial difficulties, relationship issues, health problems, employment dilemmas, and legal proceedings that are interrelated with chronic alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction, why would any person with good problem solving skills want to drink in an excessive and hazardous manner? If truth be told when some of the above topics are looked at more closely, excessive and careless drinking becomes more illogical and makes even less sense.

Wouldn’t you think that chronic alcohol abusers would be able to see some of the alcohol symptoms that they display? In a similar manner doesn’t it seem plausible to think that many more families would involve themselves in an alcohol intervention for the individual in the household who is an alcoholic or an alcohol abuser? What is more, wouldn’t you think that individuals who drink irresponsibly would try to learn more about their drinking behavior by researching various alcohol related statistics?

After reviewing the medical research literature, the point is so significant that it needs to be stated again: With all of the dangerous and debilitating consequences that are directly or indirectly interlinked with continuous and repetitive alcohol abuse and alcoholism, why would any person want to engage in hazardous and excessive drinking?

What Can be Done About the Widespread Nature of Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Addiction in the U.S.?

So what can be done about the extensive nature of alcohol abuse and alcoholism in the United States?

Our students need more meaningful and more relevant preventative and educational methods and approaches so that more students at all grade levels, including those at college, are “reached.

With a similar line of thought, our students need to learn how to become problem solvers in life rather than getting easily drawn to the ”quick fix” and the “instant gratification” of an alcohol or drug abuse “buzz” or “high”.

Individuals who are alcohol abusers or alcohol dependent need to look look at themselves honestly and ask why they are not getting the professional alcohol treatment they need.

Society needs to get the message to more people about the destructive and unhealthy consequences of hazardous and excessive drinking.

There’s Room For Hope if Those Who Engage in Continuous and Repeated Drinking Can Become Persuaded to Get the Alcohol Treatment They Need

There’s room for hope and optimism if individuals can start drinking responsibly and those who engage in repeated and continuous drinkingcan become persuaded to get the alcohol rehabilitation they need. Indeed, why put your loved ones through turmoil, suffering and pain because of your abusive and hazardous drinking when you have the power to control your life by drinking in moderation or even refraining from drinking if you cannot control your drinking? From a different way of viewing things, why not bolster your dating and marital relationships that are the effects of alcohol rehab?

I work with quite a few young men who work in construction who display irresponsible and excessive drinking. After working hard in the sun or in the cold all day, it seems to make a lot of sense to go to the local pub to have a few brews with one’s buddies. Frequently, however, it seems that the well-intentioned few shots and beers turns into a predicament in which many drinks are consumed, a lot of money is spent, and quite a few hours are spent at the local tavern instead of spending time with their wife or girlfriend, family, or with their friends.

Excessive and Careless Drinking Can Lead to Relationship, Marital, and Friendship Problems

Is it really all that astonishing in these circumstances that several these construction workers experience alcohol induced financial difficulties in spite of the fact that they make a decent amount of money? How complicated can it be for my hard working friends to realize that drinking behavior frequently leads to relationship, marital, and friendship difficulties? Why are these alcoholism and alcohol abuse signs so difficult for these construction workers to see?

Excessive and Careless Drinking Can Lead to DWIs, Problems at Work, Several Health Problems, and Various Mental Health Issues Like Depression

Should it truly be astounding to anyone that my hard working pals could receive a drunk while driving arrest almost any day or night of the week? Is anyone honestly bowled over when my hard working pals start to show up tardy for work due to their heavy and excessive drinking?

Does it actually flabbergast anyone to know that my hard working buddies eventually complain about alcohol-related health problems such as hangovers, alcohol poisoning, a loss of energy, and sleep disturbances? Is it actually shocking that many of my hard working friends are beginning to experience a variety of mental health problems like depression? Why can’t my hard working buddies “see” these alcohol abuse effects?

To a relatively great extent, these hard working men have gotten into a dysfunctional predicament that is resulting in a life of alcohol abuse or alcoholism. My hope is that these hard working guys will finally comprehend the fact that excessive drinking is not their “friend” and that they need to talk to their healthcare professional or someone at the local drug and alcohol rehab center about their problem drinking.

Regarding the drinking difficulties exhibited by my hard working pals, in the final analysis, what is necessary is honesty. Indeed, these hard working men, not unlike others who involve themselves excessive and irresponsible drinking, need to look at themselves in the mirror and make an honest assessment of what irresponsible and heavy drinking is doing to their jobs, to their finances, to their relationships, to their mental health, and to their health. In short, these hard working men need to realize the alcohol side effects of their excessive and hazardous drinking.

There’s Room For Optimism If Those Who Engage in Hazardous and Abusive Drinking Can Become Encouraged to Get the Alcohol Treatment and Alcohol Detoxification They Require

My hard working friends need to get motivated and inspired about wanting to make a favorable change in their lives. In other words, these hard working guys need to motivate themselves to go to their healthcare professional or to the local alcohol rehabilitation clinic and find out whether or not they are essentially abusing alcohol or if they are an alcoholic. Based on the information that is discovered, my hard working pals then need to get the alcohol rehabilitation and the alcohol detox treatment they require.

The fortunate news is that there’s a wide variety of rehabilitation facilities, rehab programs, drug and alcohol treatment clinics, treatment centers, and hospitals where my hard working pals can get top-of-the-line rehab for their heavy and hazardous drinking. And with some exertion, it’s even possible to find hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, treatment centers, rehab programs, and drug and alcohol treatment clinics that are relatively inexpensive.

Top-Shelf Alcohol Abuse or Alcoholism Help Can Start With a Phone Call

There were without a doubt times in the past when top-of-the-line help for alcohol dependency or alcohol abuse was far less available and more expensive that it is now. Due to the significant increase of alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction in the past decade, then again, an alcohol abuser or alcohol addicted individual usually has few, if any, legitimate excuses for failing to address his or her heavy and excessive drinking.

In point of fact, to start the change process all it takes in many instances is a short and to the point phone call to one’s physician or to someone at the local drug and alcohol treatment center. From that point forward, alcohol recovery necessitates commitment, follow through, and a truthful desire to change one’s ruinous style of life.

For a number of years alcoholism research has demonstrated the fact that there is strong relationship between alcoholism and critical health conditions and mental health issues such as depression.

For example, in 2005, scientific investigation and alcohol abuse and alcoholism statistics demonstrated the fact that that alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction cost the United States an estimated $220 billion per year. It can be emphasized that this huge alcohol-related expense was substantially more than the cost associated with cancer ($196 billion) or with obesity ($133 billion). While it is appropriate to give emphasis to these facts, it is also noteworthy to emphasize the point that an interrelationship exists between all three of these health issues.

More accurately, chronic alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction are also highly associated with obesity and with cancer.

Definitely, substance abuse research has shown that alcoholism can amplify the risk for different kinds of cancer, especially cancer of the voice box (larynx), esophagus, liver, rectum, colon, kidneys, and throat. Excessive and repetitive drinking can also result in immune system difficulties and impairment to the fetus during pregnancy.

Irresponsible and Hazardous Drinking Weakens the Person’s Systems and Organs

Additionally, if alcohol addiction continues over a period of years, the person’s body organs will likely be affected in a negative manner. For instance, repeated, hazardous drinking is especially injurious to the liver since the liver does most of the work of processing the alcohol that has been ingested. Excessive amounts of alcohol kills liver cells and obliterates the ability of liver cells to redevelop. This medical circumstance leads to a progressive inflammatory malfunction of the liver that can in the long run lead to cirrhosis of the liver, a grave and potentially incurable medical problem. Excessive, long-term drinking not only can lead to critical liver damage, but it can also lead to damage to the heart and to the brain. Physical damage this serious may be irreparable and may, in turn, result in serious disease or premature death.

The Critical Nature of Alcohol Counseling

It is important, as a result, to know how to recognize the various alcoholism symptoms and the “alcohol signs” so that the alcohol addicted individual can be given the opportunity to get the quality alcohol counseling he or she needs.

Alcoholism and Technologically Advanced Brain Research

Fortuitously, scientific investigation is constantly uncovering innovative and important information. Recent alcoholism exploration offers an excellent example. More specifically, for roughly the past ten years, complex brain-imaging scanning devices have confirmed that continuous and long-term excessive drinking transforms the structure of the brain to a great extent, consequently resulting in brain disease that can last months, years, or perchance as long as the individual lives.

More precisely, medical exploration has shown that people who have been drinking in an irresponsible manner for an extensive length of time increase their risk for developing permanent and severe transformations in the brain.

This type of damage may be indirectly associated with the drinker’s poor overall health or directly related to severe liver disease or to the alcohol’s effects on the brain.

Malnutrition, Excessive Drinking, and Mental Disorders

As a final example of various medical conditions that are to a large extent associated with alcohol addiction, consider that in accordance with medical investigation, the abusive and repeated abuse of alcohol can result in erosive gastritis, a condition that lessens the absorption of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.

This form of organ malfunctioning is related to malnutrition and to a variety of severe neurological and mental problems including sleep disturbances, memory loss, and psychosis such as Wernicke’s Encephalopathy and Korsakoff’s syndrome. This latter medical condition is a long-term debilitating health problem that is typified by incessant learning and memory complications.

Excessive and Hazardous Drinking Also Leads to in Friendship and Relationship Problems

In addition to acute medical problems, thoughtless drinking also leads to relationship and friendship difficulties. As an illustration, people who engage in excessive drinking typically go through divorce, sexuality problems, affairs, and marital problems.

Conclusion: The Relevance of Education

It is obvious that repetitive, excessive drinking is directly or indirectly linked to numerous acute medical problems that can and do lead to dangerous illness and premature death. Such information needs to be emphasized and presented to everyone in our society, especially to all students, so that most individuals will be able to refrain from irresponsible drinking while others who have a drinking problem will get the professional rehab they require.

Let us look at this with a common sense perspective. Yes, alcohol treatment is important, but alcohol treatment is something that is commonly done AFTER the fact. Education, to the contrary, is something that is done BEFORE the problem manifests itself. Stated a different way, whereas alcohol treatment is “reactive,” education is “proactive.” It is asserted that both approaches are necessary when discussing alcohol problems.

Denny is a fifteen-year-old youth who has finally determined that he needs to go and see his family doctor about his careless and excessive drinking. At first, Denny thought he would be able to merely go online, look for some basic alcohol info and determine whether or not he was an alcoholic.

Not unexpectedly, he discovered quite a few websites that spelled out some of the usual alcoholism symptoms. That’s the encouraging news. The less positive news, sadly, was that Denny showed evidence of many of these alcoholism symptoms.

Examples of Alcohol Addiction Symptoms

For instance, Denny has been drinking a lot more than customary and he has started to have more passionate squabbles with the female he is dating. In much the same way, for the first time in his young life he has been going through sleeping difficulties. Likewise, Denny habitually has felt depressed and on an increasing basis he has been exhibiting less than usual attention to detail in class. Furthermore, he has felt highly stressed and more on edge on a daily basis and for the past several months he has manifested foggy thinking in class. Given that Denny has been demonstrating all of these symptoms, he was justifiably uneasy about his drinking behavior.

So Denny finally decided to place a phone call to his healthcare practitioner and schedule an appointment. To tell the truth, this was rough for Denny because his family doctor was also his parents’ family healthcare practitioner. The springboard for his worry was this: at the risk of embarrassing his family, he had to go and divulge his excessive and hazardous drinking behavior to his family healthcare practitioner.

When Denny arrived at the healthcare practitioner’s office, he overtly notified the family physician about the concern he feels about his irresponsible drinking behavior. When the healthcare practitioner asked what was triggering this trepidation, Denny declared that he had gone on the Internet and read about dependency on alcohol and especially about alcoholism symptoms. He then listed all of the alcohol addiction symptoms that he obviously thought he manifests.

A Thorough Physical Evaluation and Outpatient Alcohol Rehab

The family physician told Denny that it was prudent of him to attend to his drinking difficulties, he gave Denny an in depth physical examination, and suggested that he talk to his parents about enrolling in an out-patient alcohol rehab program that was managed by Doctor Robbins, one of his doctor acquaintances who is a drug and alcohol addiction specialist.

Moreover, when Denny articulated that he has been feeling depressed to a greater degree, the healthcare professional told Denny that alcoholism and depression many times crop up in the same individual. For that reason, the physician also suggested that Denny talk to his parents about getting therapy to tackle his depression. In fact, Denny can go to the local counseling center and make an appointment with Doctor Anderson, an eminent counseling psychologist who specializes in treating adolescents.

The Importance of Dealing With Your Drinking Problems and Getting Enthused About Making Healthy and Positive Changes in Your Life

The physician made it a point to notify Denny that he might not necessarily be dependent on alcohol, but that he was evidently drinking in an irresponsible manner. Stated differently, Denny was involving himself in teen alcohol abuse. The family healthcare practitioner then notified Denny that the reason he suggested alcohol treatment in the first place was because he wanted him to face up to his drinking problems, make sure that he prevented them from escalating, and start to live in a more healthy manner, even if it meant that he had to entirely quit drinking.

In brief, by productively treating his drinking problems, Denny would be able to get his drinking problems under control and refrain from the negative sequence of events that could doubtless result in alcohol addiction.

Denny undoubtedly did not look forward to facing his parents about his drinking issues and his depression. And he certainly did not want to face the thought of enrolling in an alcohol rehabilitation center. And last but not least, he was not thrilled about going to a counselor about his depression. Irrespective of these trepidations, nonetheless, Denny as a matter of fact experienced some psychological relief for the first time in quite a few months because he eventually quit making excuses for himself and finally made up his mind to do something productive about his abusive and unhealthy drinking. And it was clear that this decision helped to foster his self esteem and personal success and further improve upon the communication skills in his dating relationships.

Approximately five months ago I had lunch with a thirty-six-year-old male named Alexander who suffers from intense depression, has relationship issues, and who is drug and alcohol dependent. As mentioned by Alexander, it is his drug addiction and alcoholism and his intense depression that had the most to do with his constant relationship problems.

I recollect hearing that a history of mental health issues, drug addiction, and abusive and unhealthy drinking frequently take place in the same family. Moreover, I have read that in such situations, an individual needs to get counseling for both medical conditions and that dependency and mental health issues tend to take place in the same person.

As affirmed by Alexander, he is so defeated by his relationship difficulties and by both of his medical conditions that he, for all intents and purposes, has little or no ambition to complete much of anything. What is especially unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Alexander managed to complete two semesters of grad school in religious studies.

Alexander’s condition makes me wonder if he is an example of a person who can look in the mirror and see his drug abuse and alcohol drinking problems and do something healthy about these difficulties or if he is someone who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets drug and alcohol addiction treatment that results in long lasting sobriety.

The Need For a Rehab Program He Can Believe In and a Physician He Can Trust

If it would be beneficial I would expect that I could advise him about quite a lot of blogs and websites that could possibly help him find info about drug abuse symptoms, the stages of alcoholism, substance abuse information, and relationship issues. In my honest opinion, nonetheless, Alexander needs to locate a counseling protocol he can believe in and follow over the long haul and find a psychologist he can trust.

I could be wrong but it seems logical to conclude that Alexander probably needs to look honestly at his life regarding his drug addiction signs and alcoholic symptoms and recognize the fact that he cannot use drugs or drink at all if he wants to get sober, stay sober, and start on the path to long-lasting recovery.

It may be asked how counseling would help his alcohol and drug dependency. For starters, there are some newly discovered doctor-prescribed drugs that can help Alexander through the drug and alcohol detoxification process, through his withdrawal symptoms, and help him avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse.

Second, Alexander would learn to accept the fact that there is absolutely nothing affirmative about chemical dependency and hazardous and abusive drinking and that messing around with one or both circumstances is the route to financial difficulties, legal problems, deteriorating health, shattered relationships, a premature death, and poor work and school performance.

Third, treatment for his depression and for his relationship problems might help him deal with these medical problems more effectively and possibly create less of a need for him to engage in addictive behavior.

The Significance of Recovery Groups Such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous

There are realistically a lot of friends, family members, and other people who would want to help Alexander with his chemical dependency and his hazardous and excessive drinking. He more likely than not would experience greater tolerance from a recovery group such as Narcotics Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous, on the other hand, rather than getting guidance from people who drink in moderation or who have never used drugs.

When Individuals Accomplish Things They Like and About Which They Are Passionate

There’s a philosophical viewpoint that stresses that people who accomplish things they love and something about which they are zealous arrive at an astonishing place in life. Stated differently, when people do what they love, they rarely if ever go through an uneventful life or boredom. If they get involved in something that is satisfying, furthermore, they become more fulfilled and experience more pleasure and delight in life and in their relationships.

When this is thought about even for a few moments it becomes clear that this positive frame of mind is widely divergent from a life that is grounded in chemical dependency because such a lifestyle removes the contentment and joy that life offers.

Because Alexander doesn’t have the ambition to carry out much of anything in his life, it is plain to see that he urgently needs some hope for a more fulfilling existence. And the sad thing is that hope is almost everywhere around Alexander if he could only get to the place in life to get the counseling he needs for his extreme depression and drug addiction and alcoholism and remain in his treatment protocol.

Better Relationships, A Meaningful Life, Self Esteem, and Beneficial Change Are Possibilities

Alexander is simply too young to be overwhelmed in life. He doesn’t understand this right now but if he can learn how to refrain from alcohol and drugs via alcohol and drug therapy and get the counseling he requires for his intense depression, he can redirect his life and start living with passion, direction, and with self-respect.

Enhanced relationships, a wonderful life, self esteem, and productive change are certainly possibilities for Alexander if only he could get motivated to get the medical treatment he requires, follow through with his treatment program, live his life in a healthy and sober way, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about life.

Roughly a week ago I heard about a twenty-eight-year-old lady named Rachael who is bipolar and who is also addicted to alcohol and drugs. I remember reading that in such situations, a person needs to get counseling for both medical situations and that mental health issues and dependency commonly occur in the same individual. Not only this, but I recollect hearing that a history of unhealthy drinking, drug addiction, and/or mental health concerns quite often happen in the same family.

Plainly, Rachael is so overcome by both of her medical conditions and her relationship and dating issues that she essentially has little or no ambition to do much of anything. What is particularly sad about this is that earlier in her life, Rachael finished one year of college. Rachael’s circumstance makes me wonder if she is an illustration of a person who has to hit life’s bottom before he or she gets drug and alcohol dependency rehabilitation that results in lasting recovery.

The Need For a Physician She Trusts and a Rehab Regimen She Can Believe In

If I were in communication with Rachael I could recommend more than a few websites and blogs that could possibly help her learn more about addiction and alcoholic behavior, relevant substance abuse information, facts about alcoholism and drugs, more info about addiction symptoms and alcoholism warning signs, and relationship info. From where I stand, nonetheless, Rachael needs to locate a physician she trusts and a counseling regimen she can believe in and follow over the long term. I could be in error but it seems to me that Rachael more likely than not needs to comprehend the fact that she cannot drink in moderation or abuse drugs if she wants to get sober, remain sober, and start on the path to lasting sobriety.

I am aware that there are some recently developed physician-prescribed medications that can help Rachael avoid a drug and an alcohol drug relapse, help her through the drug and alcohol detox process, and help her through her withdrawal symptoms. Clearly it would be in Rachael’s best interests if she knew about these drugs.

It seems clear that Rachael needs to accept the fact that there is completely nothing affirmative about hazardous and careless drinking and chemical dependency and that engaging in one or both situations is the road to financial difficulties, legal problems, deteriorating health, shattered relationships, a premature death, and poor work and school performance.

The Significance of Support Groups Like Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous

There are reasonably numerous persons such as other individuals, friends, and family members who would like to help Rachael but she probably would experience greater acceptance from a support group such as Narcotics Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous rather than listening to individuals who drink responsibly or who have never abused drugs.

When Individuals Do Things They Like and About Which They Are Passionate

There’s a school of thought in psychology that stresses that people who do things they like and something about which they are dedicated reach a fantastic place in life. In other words, when people do what they love, they almost never experience boredom or an uneventful life. If they involve themselves in something that is satisfying, moreover, they become more actualized and experience more pleasure and delight in life and in their relationships.

To me, this sounds diametrically opposed to a life that is rooted in substance abuse because such a lifestyle removes the satisfaction and delight that life has to offer.

Because Rachael doesn’t have the resolve to do much of anything in her life, it is clear that she urgently needs a little hope for a better life. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is virtually everywhere around Rachael if she could only get to the point in life to get the therapy she needs for her bipolar illness and dependency and continue with her treatment program.

Enhanced Relationships, A Meaningful Life, Self Esteem, and Beneficial Change Are Possibilities

Rachael is clearly too young to be beaten in life. She doesn’t understand this at the moment but if she can learn how to remove herself from drugs and alcohol through drug and alcohol therapy and get the treatment she needs for her mental health condition, she can redirect her life and start living with passion, direction, and with self-respect.

Stronger relationships, constructive change, self respect, and a wonderful life are certainly a reality for Rachael if only she could get inspired to get the professional rehabilitation she needs, follow through with her therapy regimen, live her life in an alcohol and drug-free and healthy manner, and develop a more positive attitude about her existence.
